From Complaint to Need
Turning frustration into a clear, actionable request
Every complaint is a need in disguise · Learn to ask for what matters
Instructions
This exercise helps you turn a complaint into a clear request. You’ll first uncover the need underneath your frustration, then learn to put it into words the other person can actually act on.
Work through each step in order. The more honest and concrete you are, the more useful this will be.
How to use this exercise
- Steps unlock one at a time — finish one before moving to the next.
- Fill in steps: complete each prompt honestly in the text area provided.
- There are no right or wrong answers — only yours.
- Step 2 turns your answers into a request you could actually say out loud.
📍 Step 0 · Situation
What is the situation about?
Before diving in, name the situation you want to work on.
Prompt: Be specific — one situation, one moment, one relationship. A sentence or two is enough.
The situation is about…
✎ Step 1 · Fill in
Figure out what you want
Every complaint carries a need underneath it. Let’s find yours.
Situation:—
Prompt: Write honestly, without editing yourself. You can always refine the wording later.
What is your current complaint about what is happening?
What’s the strongest emotion you feel about this? What is the impact on you?
If you removed all the situation & challenges, what is still true about what you need?
What would you like to experience instead? What does this situation tell you about what’s important to you?
What is in your control to get this need met?
A complaint points backward, at what went wrong. A need points forward, at what would make things right.
✎ Step 2 · Fill in
Learn how to ask for it
Turn your need into a request, using facts instead of judgments.
Situation:—
Prompt: Stick to what actually happened — things a camera could have recorded. Save your feelings for the Impact line.
Situation — In…
Behavior — When you did…
Impact — I felt… (feeling)
Impact — the facts
Need — What I need from you…
Your request, in words
