Rogers
Map

A tool to help you and your client understand what is really going on

What is the Rogers Map

A map of the inner world

Rooted in Carl Rogers' person-centred approach, this map gives a structured language to what is happening beneath the surface for a client. It traces the path from a triggering event all the way down to the core missing experience — the felt sense that was never fully available.

Rogers believed that people move toward growth when they feel genuinely understood. This map helps you — and them — arrive at that understanding.

For whom

Coaches & therapists

Use during or after a session to organise what you are hearing. The map is a shared language, not a diagnosis. It helps locate the client's experience within a coherent, compassionate framework.

The core idea

Protection makes sense

Every difficult pattern a client presents is a strategy — it once served a purpose. The Rogers Map helps you honour that without being limited by it.

The Map — 5 Steps
Step 0
The Trigger
What happened? Who was there? What did it evoke?
Step 1
The Cost
What is the pain? What is the impact on the client?
Step 2
The Strategy
How does the client protect themselves? What is the character strategy?
Step 3
The Wound
What is the strategy shielding them from? The core belief.
Step 4
Missing Experience
What does the client actually need to feel? What was absent?
How to use this tool

Guidance for the session

1 · Create a new client tab using the + New Client button above. Each client has their own independent, private space.

2 · Work through the steps in order during or after your session. There is no right or wrong — follow what is alive in the conversation.

3 · In Step 0, use the Shiro Emotion Map to identify what is present. Click a sensation card to expand it, then tick the specific feelings that resonate. Multiple selections are welcome.

4 · In Steps 1–4, tick everything that resonates and use the free text to capture the client's own words.

5 · The Session Summary at the bottom assembles everything automatically. Download it as a text file to keep a record.
