How does this work?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a psychotherapeutic model developed by Richard Schwartz that understands the mind as a system of distinct internal parts, each with its own perspective, feelings, and motivations. Rather than being a single unified voice, we are more like an inner family — a community of parts, all trying to help us in their own way, even when their strategies create conflict or pain.
At the centre of this system lives the Self: a core of calm, curiosity, and compassion that, when present, can lead the whole inner family with wisdom. The goal of IFS is not to eliminate parts, but to help them transform — so the Self can lead and every part can finally rest.

Learn more about the voices and their roles
Defensive Blockers
Proactive protective parts. Defensive Blockers work ahead of time to prevent pain from arising. They plan, control, anticipate, judge, and push us to perform — all to keep painful emotions locked away. Common voices: the Inner Critic, the Perfectionist, the People-Pleaser, the Controller.
In the LeaderNess model, Defensive Blockers are called Defensive Blockers — they block growth and authentic expression through pre-emptive defence, self-demand, and vigilance.

"If I stay in control and do everything right, nothing bad can happen."
Emergency Blockers
Reactive protective parts. When Defensive Blockers fail to prevent pain and an Exile's emotions flood the system, Emergency Blockers rush in to extinguish that pain — fast, by any means necessary: dissociation, distraction, numbing, impulsivity, rage, or withdrawal.
In the LeaderNess model, Emergency Blockers are called Emergency Blockers — they block feeling through reactive, emergency-mode strategies that prioritise relief over wellbeing.

"I don't care about consequences — I just need this pain to stop right now."
Exiles
Wounded vulnerable parts. Exiles are the youngest, most fragile parts — those who were hurt, shamed, abandoned, or overwhelmed at some point in life and were subsequently pushed out of awareness to protect the system. They carry the raw burdens of worthlessness, fear, longing, and grief.
Protectors (Defensive Blockers and Emergency Blockers) work tirelessly to keep Exiles contained — because when an Exile surfaces, the pain can feel unbearable. Healing requires safely meeting these parts, not suppressing them further.

"I am not enough. I am not loveable. I am alone with this."
Self
The core of who you are — not a part. The Self is the seat of consciousness and the natural leader of the inner system. It is characterised by the 8 C's: Calm, Curiosity, Clarity, Compassion, Confidence, Creativity, Courage, and Connectedness.
Self is always present, even if buried under protective parts. When parts trust the Self to lead, they can step back from their extreme roles and the whole system moves toward integration, healing, and genuine leadership.

"I can hold all of this — with openness, warmth, and without being overwhelmed."
How to answer
For each statement, choose the number that best reflects how often this feels true for you. Go with your gut — there are no right or wrong answers.
Statements appear in a randomised order within each section. Once you have answered all 44, your full personal picture will appear — including what patterns are most active, what they are protecting, and what they tend to cost you.
